Do We Want To Close Guantanamo Bay?

Think about it. Do we want to close it? Guantamo Bay is an old U.S. Navy base. When President Barrack Obama was asked about it he said "I think it's going to take some time and our legal teams are working in consultation with our national security apparatus as we speak to help design exactly what we need to do," -- but what do we need to do? Do you want to close Guantanamo Bay? Will the United States be safer? Does closing Gitmo benefit the United States and Homeland Security in any way?

What Guantanamo Bay Is (Spanish: Bahía de Guantánamo):

  • An inlet of the Caribbean Sea (yes, it's a Bay like San Francisco Bay)
  • Located in Guantánamo Province, the southeast end of Cuba
  • It's close to the Windward Passage between Cuba and Haiti
  • American concentration camp named Camp Delta

The military base has recently become the subject of great controversey.

Gitmo has been used by the United States Navy for more than a century. It is the oldest offshore U.S. Navy Base, and the only one in a country with which the United States does not have diplomatic relations. The government of Cuba deeply opposes the presence of the American military, claiming that their lease to the land in Cuba is invalid under international law. The U.S. government denies Cuba's claim and states that the use of the Cuban land is perfectly valid.
